  The Great Buildings Collection

I have found examples of good design to be very helpful in studio teaching, and in the Oregon design studios I found the difficulty of spontaneous access to references for diverse architectural precedents restricted the potential for communication with my students. Too often students would go the library to find a reference I had cited, search for 30 or 40 minutes, and then come back empty-handed.

So in 1990 I began to collect various information about key buildings and to assemble it in a multimedia format for quick access. After four years of increasingly organized and focused research, with the help of up to a dozen simultaneous student workers coordinated through a custom automatic indexing and groupwork system, the multimedia collection was published in the form of The GBC.

Buildings List

The Great Buildings Collection is a multimedia encyclopedia of architecture on Macintosh CD-ROM. It documents about 750 buildings from around the world and across history, with roughly 2000 photograpic images, architectural drawings, commentaries, bibliography, digital video clips, and hundreds of live three-dimensional models.

The highly interactive collection supports easy browsing or directed searches, using maps, a history timeline, topical thumbnail palettes, and both simple and conditional text searches on a wide range of criteria.
